I have a Gleaner E engine installed in a WD and I'm on my second starter. Will the nose cone from a WD starter fit on the starter from a 170 or later D17? Has anyone replaced a WD starter with something better?

Starter parts don't interchange. What is failing on the starter?? Broken nose cones usually mean the ignition timing is too soon, or possibly the distributer advance mechanism is stuck. You used a timing light on it to set the timing, correct ????

The engine turns over hard and I think I burned the armature on the last starter. The main problem was a bad ring gear. I just overhauled the engine, new ring gear, etc. Used Old's advice and heated the new ring gear in the oven. Tried to start the motor after the overhaul. Smoke out of the starter, not enough power to turn the engine over. Had a spare starter and that finally got it started but the starter smoked a little also, lots of cooking off periods for the starter. I read that you can get 9-tooth geared starter drives. Not quite sure if I understand how that would work. Just wondering if the newer starters had more oomph. 12 volt system here.

So, does the engine turn over really hard, or are you just working with old starters and maybe a poor ground to the starter?? 12 volts with good connections should start the engine easily. That's all I've ever used on a 360 cubic inch 12 to 1 compression pulling engine with a 880 CCA battery. Ground cable right to the starter mounting pointed set-bolt is the best connection you can get.

I can turn the engine over with an 18" pipe wrench. Doesn't seem excessively hard to turn over. I think I'm just dealing with old worn out starters. I'll try mounting the ground to the starter, I've tried different ground points but not that. Wow, an 880 CCA battery is a lot bigger than I've got. Are you saying you start your pulling tractor with a stock WD starter, probably originally 6 volt?

Yessir. A healthy stock 6 volt OEM starter with 880 CCA 12 volt battery will start that big engine.

One other thing about the "WD" series Delco brand starters. Some of them have a center bearing. Some do not. I always figured when the WD-45 came out that's when the center bearing went into effect. Those tractors may have had 3 or 4 reman starters stuck on them by now and who knows where the reman starter came from ?? maybe an old WD or WC with no "center" bearing ??

I've had both of my starters apart to install new brushes, springs and bushings and I'm sure neither one has a center bearing. Just the bushing at the end by the brushes and a bushing at the end of the nose cone. Thanks for your advice. I'll buy a new 6 volt WD starter if my last one gives out.
