I have been working on my father in laws 175 brakes. They are shot! I ordered new bands and the discs from a online source. The bands went on fine but the discs, the rivets are to short. There is a steel plate that was between the old disc an the drum on both sides. My parts book doesn't show them but they was on the an as far as we know nobody has ever been into the brakes before. Also one disc the rivet head isn't countersunk very deep. So do the plates belong in there? Do I just need to send these discs back an get some from a AC dealer? The rivets that came with these are 1/2 inch long. Would need 3/4 inch to have enough to hold good. This is my first AC to tear into the brakes on so any friendly advice will be greatly appreciated.

You need to be talking to your on-line Supplier as to why you have rivets that are too short OR the pockets for the rivet heads aren't DEEP enough. I'm concerned that the linings are too thick too. That tractor came from the Factory with asbestos linings with no steel plate between the drum and the lining. About 25 years ago the Feds banned asbestos and manufacturers had to come up with a viable replacement material. One of those substitutes was "Kevlar" which was mounted on a thin layer of cork and then a steel plate. Kevlar feels like pool table felt. The total thickness of these 3 things stacked together was exactly the same as the asbestos lining was. The thickness of whatever material you are riveting onto the drums has to be pretty darn close to the SAME thickness as OEM or you will have to re-shim the outer disc surface. With brand new disc lining and the axle re-assembled the drum assembly should have a MINIMUM of .030" side-to-side movement in the axle shaft. Maximum gap is .080". Be sure to replace all springs and to remove the brake rod and anti-sieze the threaded end as this is how you adjust the brakes when you are done. It's frustrating 10 yrs from now to not be able to turn that brake rod to tighten the brakes because some nimrod didn't anti-sieze the threads.

I'd send them back and have Rick Corder do your brakes. The man is amazing and nearly as cheap as the junk they sell on-line.

I sent the parts back. I wasn't comfortable using them. I contacted the local AC dealer an hour away and they had set in stock. Little more $$$ but fit as they should. This set are made by Bendix you can defiantly tell its better material. Got the easy side done and they work like new. Just started this morning on the right side. Thank you Dr Allis for the measurements. Reinstalled I was within you specs. Now all I need is for it to stop raining an warm up!!

The hydraulic console on the right side does NOT have to be removed !!! Not one hydraulic line needs to be touched !! You will have to undo some of the linkage underneath it and tie things up with mechanics wire. Also stick a 2 x 4 of proper length between the right platform and the console to lift it up an inch or two and the axle will slide right out from underneath the console.
