D-14 Headlight Bulb Repacement

I recently bought a 1957 D-14. Previous owner had converted it to 12 volts electrical system but had not completed wiring and bulb changes.
I need to replace the 6 volt bulbs in the headlights with 12 volt bulbs. I pulle the reflector can out of the housing, but how do removed the headlight lense to gain access to the bulb?

If you have the reflector out, then you already have the lens out. But is the lens stuck to the reflector with the old, melted gasket? Just have to pry/work it loose, discard the old rubber, and get a new one.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for responding.
Yes, I have the reflector and lense out. Looks like the gasket is behind the lense. Just don't want to damage anything while trying to get the gasket out from behind the lenses. I don't see how the lenses will come out without bending open the metal lip on the reflector that holds the lense in. Is there a complete reflector/lense assembly available from tractor parts suppliers?
Thanks, Bill

I don't know! Last I recall working on one the reflector bowl set back in the housing, then a rubber gasket was placed between that bowl edge and the lens, then the steel ring was clamped around it all, tightening it up.

I can't envision what you've got. I'm wondering if it's not original?

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

I'm thinking the correct sealed beam will fit in the same housing, replacing the reflector and lens.

According to the parts book, it's a sealed unit. According to all the on line aftermarket sellers, it's the old metal reflector with the glass and gasket. If thats the case, any 1157 bulb will fit. You just need the gaskets. Your reflectors may be so corroded, they don't reflect very well. You can buy new parts, or an all new assembly, but the assembly may not be 100% restoration accurate.

Bob,
After looking at it some more, what I have is a 6 volt sealed beam with a screw connection on the back of the reflector and a tab on the rim to attach the ground wire. This resembles the origininal reflector, gasket, lense and bulb assembly. I guess what I need is a 12 volt version of this sealed beam. I ordered a sealed beam unit (4411), but both the connections are on the back of the sealed beam and the lense is too small for the clamp to tighten around it. Anyone know where to find a 12 v sealed beam like the 6v I removed?

Thanks!!

I'm wondering if you could obtain the clamp/ring for a newer tractor that would be enough smaller, that it would tighten up? Only way I know would be to try it.

Otherwise, could you experiment with something like a large O-ring which would simulate the original gasket, and take up room between the clamp and the sealed beam? Those original style gaskets are available also.

I think, short of buying complete new lamp assemblies, there will have to be some adapting as I am not aware of any different or special sealed beams.

Moving, or making connections on the back [inside] of the sealed beam for both + and - should not be an issue.
