12 volt battery

I have a 1948 WC with a magneto , can I use a 12volt battery with out burning every thing up ?

First, NO connection between battery power and the magneto is needed, and if there is one, the $$$$ smoke will be let out of the mag.

ASSUMING it has a 6 Volt generator with two terminal studs, "A" (Armature) and "F" (Field), disconnect the wires from both terminals and tape/insulate them.

At this point, you aren't going to harm any electrical components by using a 12 Volt battery.
