What year a D 17 is the serial number 41098 ? M, and the serial number D 17 56 511-Z, and what does that M and z stand for at the end ?
With the paint I hope I got the numbers right .

Those are engine serial numbers. The M and Z refer to compression ratios. Tractor serial number is on the left side bellhousing just above the frame rail.

As Aaron said the tractor number is stamped on the left side of the clutch housing above the steering shaft andframe rail. It should start with D17 and end with a D if it is a diesel. IF 41098 is in that location it is a 1962 but I dont know about the M means.

That G-226 engine is the same as a D-17 tractor and would be considered a 1958 model year build with that low serial number. The "M" code is 7.25 to 1 compression ratio, which was for gasoline fuel, not LPgas. A G-226 is not to be confused with the W-226, which was used in the WD-45 tractor. They are similar in many respects, but they ain't the same. The blocks and crankshafts are different between the two engines.
