Wd-45 no start

Having some issues with my wd-45. The tractor has not ran in over three years. Rebuilt the card, drained the old gas, new battery, cleaned the glass bowl, cleaned out the gas line, put new gas, changed the oil an filter, and she fired right up. Ran for about ten minutes and had a loud backfire and the tractor shut off. I found the gear on the bottom of the distributor had stripped out. Replaced the distributor and the housing for it. Set the #1 piston top dead center, turned to the left till point were about to open, set the plugs at 1243 per the firing order, tractor will not start. I have spark at points and at spark plugs, compression is good. Any suggestions?

Just verifying. You have the piston closest to the radiator at TDC? Are you sure it's TDC on compression?

I just turn till the rotor lines up with a lug, then that is #1. Guess I'd say try turning the distributor one way or another till she fires.

From the other comments and replies it sounds like you have a good grasp as to how to time the distributor. The only thing I can suggest is look more closely at the distributor. Did it come off a working tractor, new or something you had lying around. Just because you have spark does not mean it will fire a plug. It must be a blue spark that can jump 1/4 gap. You may need to use the old distributor parts in the new distributor.

You are probably 180 degrees off on your distributor. You had
the piston a TDC, but on the wrong stroke. Try swapping
wires with the ones directly across from one another.

Thank you guys for the suggestion. I eventually got the tractor to start and adjusted the distributor so now it runs super good. Let it sit for a couple of hours and it fired right up. Now on to fix my 1950 allis Chalmers dd road grader that needs an engine rebuild

What was the problem, or what did you do to get her going again? It is good for all our memory banks, even if we have heard it (read it) before.

Just kept trying to start the tractor and eventually it fired off. Just went out an started it and it fired up first try
