Elderly relative passed last yr, his nephew is getting rid of ol,junk tools equip, family has first chance, other than few select tools, wall hangers etc, got a wd parts tractor for my wd45, it intrigued me because of bent shifter, was thinking late wd, serial wd221549' which makes it a wd45, yet engine has side plate, like a wd, trans has bent shifter, late wd or 45, any other features or differences that I can use to determine whether it was a wd with latter wd 45 trans and rear end or a wd 45 with a wd motor,?? Dunno what I'm getting but it's free to me and I know I can use some parts thanks

I'm going to say 45 with a WD transplant engine. That late of a number it should be 100% WD45. Either way, free is a good price.

I may have had the only one,my 1953 WD stated the year and model on a tag on the back side of the radiator.

Must be one of them Half breed deals, here stories about em every once in a while. Guy while back was talking about a farmall a/b thing

Could be a couple things, maybe a complete motor replacement with a WC/WD motor or tractor needed a new block and they had the WD45 parts put in a WD block.Part number on the head would be a clue too plus the size of the carb.

Shifter means very little. I have a WD45 that has a straight shifter. Serial number has it as a WD45 and so does the engine but the shifter says WD.

I have a wd that was 100% original when dad got it. Stick comes
up straight then back at a 45 degree angle. I've seen another
like it in a local fence line.

Any rear end housing that says WD 127007 or newer is a helical gear, constant mesh transmission and has a curved gearshift. The older straight stick transmissions (prior to s/n 127007) are a sliding gear transmission very similar to a WC. The rear end case is different between the two transmissions, because the countershaft bearings became Timken tapered roller bearings on the helical gear trans versus roller bearings on a shaft in the old transmission. The shift cover and forks are different between the two transmissions and will not interchange. A curved shifter will not fit into a straight shifter cover or vice versa. Late model WD's had this transmission from s/n 127007 thru 146606. At s/n 146607 the WD45's began. I don't care how many have seen a bent or straight stick on what or whatever. These are the facts....the parts don't interchange before or after rear end s/n 127007. So, some of these gearshift claims are homemade. The tractor in question is a legit WD45 with a WD block at least. It may have WD45 internal engine parts or it may not. Also, later WD's had the tall 4 inch cyl head from the factory.

Thanks Doc!! That clears up a lot of questions. I'm new to the WD neighborhood but I grew up with an allis "B". I bought a 1956 (SN223928) WD45 and found it has a WD engine. All the indications are there that that's what it is. Being a purist I now have the option of finding and installing a WD45 engine. Incidently the engine serial # is 229444 Thanks again Chuck

Engine s/n should read W-229444- G or K . The "W" signifies a WC or WD engine of 201 cubes. If it is a WD-45 engine the s/n will read 45- XXXXXXX and it was 226 cubes from the factory.
