G262 Oil Leak from exhaust

I noticed an oil leak from the exhaust manifold of my gleaner CII during harvest. It is not from the valve cover and the oil appears to be seeping through the manifold gasket. I am assuming that this means the rings are shot. We have used the combine on 50 acres for three years and the engine has run well every season without incident. Now it backfires once in awhile and burns about 2 quarts of oil in an 8 hour day. The spark plug on the cylinder nearest to the leak is gunked up and oily.

The weird part is that the previous owner stated that he had the same issue. his solution was to install an auxiliary oil filter (the kind that uses toliet paper) and the leak stopped. I took the aux filter off this summer while changing the oil and now the oil leak has reappeared. Is this just a coincidence? I can't think of how an aux oil filter would keep oil out of the exhaust. I'm normally an IH guy, so any wise advice is welcome.
