Timing d17

This is the old man again I get snap crackle and pop I thought there was water in the gas I changed all that so I think it's out of time but I don't
know how to time or how do I adjust it and a video or help.

Timing is not all that hard to do. One gets the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke and then makes sure the rotor points to the nipple that has the #1 plug wire on it. Then one adjusts the distributor as per the manual

Ignition timing (as a rule) just doesn't change itself. One of the dumbest things ever done is for someone to start "adjusting" the timing without having a clue what they are doing. First thing to do is to MARK the distributer to the governor housing with a light chisel mark or scribe. This will allow you to return to where you were before you start screwing around with changing the timing. Your tractor has a loader on it ?????? That is probably bad, because the timing procedure is done with a timing light at wide open throttle. You shine the timing light thru a 1 inch hole on the right side of the flywheel/clutch housing. Your loader may have that hole covered up. Like I said.....timing usually doesn't change itself. Something else is probably your problem.

It probably has timing gears. No way it could change cam timing unless gear stripped teeth. If it had a timing chain, if grossly worn, might be able to jump a tooth. I have had bad plug wires do goofy things that made you think it was something else. Try to replicate fault condition in the dark. You might see sparks jumping where they should not be!

Spray distributor cap inside and out with WD40. First check for cracks in distributor cap. If you can see cracks replace cap. Check rotor and terminals inside cap for corrosion.

Timing usually doesn?t change itself but remember;
A change in the point gap will change the timing.
A change in the timing will not change the point gap.
Obviously this is why the points are always set before the timing is adjusted. If the point gap was changed because of wear on the points cam arm or the point surface itself the timing will change.
