My brother want to buy a CA Allis, what years did they make them, and the one he has got spotted the hand clutch doesn't work, what usually goes wrong with them ?

1950- 57 Two possibilities for the hand clutch The disk will rust stick to the driver if the tractor sits for long periods of time in poor storage or the clutch is not used. Also a lot of them got bolted together when the inner axle seal failed and soaked things with oil and you couldn't keep them from slipping any other way.

Yes, dry clutch. Never been around one, but I guess it wasn't the best design. Solid little tractors.

They are a dry clutch located in the two piece, right pinion drive shaft. You have to hold them released to stop travel, while keeping the PTO/hydraulics live. They are spring loaded and fairly stiff. They have a tendency not to be real smooth, mine is better if it is being used regularly.

This tractor has been sitting a quite a bit, but inside, it's a older gentleman,he claims it's perfect in every way except that clutch, he's buying it for his nephew to show his roto baler off, So that's what, a $500.00 repair ?

That clutch is AC worst effort on those clutches,a Roto Baler can be used with one,but if they want a tractor of that era to run a Roto Baler a WD would be the better choice by far.

I doubt it's $500. Without having it apart to know if it's rust or broken parts. Rick Corder over on the other AC page is a clutch rebuilder and a darn good one. He can redo the pads and probably help with advise on the rest. If you plan on using the baler, I'd find a good WD. If you plan on just showing it, go for the CA. More than one has had that clutch disabled.

Gonna disagree with you on that, the CA hand clutch is much smoother to use than the WD I have one of each. The CA is kinda short on power to run a baler though, it will do it, but it won't like it.

The first couple of years we baled we used the CA, until my uncle bought a Ford 961, twice the horsepower, but the clutch system truly sucked for a kid wanting to stop the wheels but not the baler.

I redid mine with new clutch kit from Sandy Lake. It wasn't that expensive of parts, just your time in tearing it apart to fix.
I had to get a machine shop to help as it the hub was stuck fast on the shaft.
Good tractors that have a lot of pep for their size.
