D17 series III diesel with blowby. Should I ??

I ran across a decent looking (for its age) D17 diesel. Has some blowby. Price is fair for condition. I had a couple WD45 gas tractors in the 80s-90s. Liked them, but have had MF since then. Trying to talk myself out of buying this D17. Has 3 point and aux hyd disconnects. What is the most common problem with them? What should I look for?
 
Looks like a lot of tractor. Sitting on 16.9-28. Dead battery, couldn't start it. One flat rear tire with a new rim. Guy says it has a slow leak. I will look at it again when its not raining. How would you tell if it had a cracked head? Shows no externa leaks.
 
The one I have had a bad crank. But the
rest of the tractor was terrible also. Made
a pulling tractor out of it, so it didn't
matter. If it will start with a good
battery. I wouldn't worry about a little
blow by. Or a cracked head if the watet and
oil are in the right place.
 
It has blow-by and you haven't heard or seen it run?? If you are expecting this tractor to be depended on for working on a farm, I wouldn't even think about it. On a 1 to 10 scale, they are about a 5. There is an expensive injection pump to maintain. I will almost guarantee the engine needs an overhaul when you finally do see how much blow-by it has. Run, don't walk.
 
Like Dr Allis aid it could turn into a money pit real quick and buying one not running adds to the likely hood of that.You didn't say what a 'fair price' is either.
 
Start it up and then pull the radiator cap. If it starts building pressure immediately and pushing coolant out, it's leaking compression. Could be cracked head, could be blown head gasket from sunken sleeves
