Hello . My name is Brian and I am new to the Alice Chalmers board. I have sometimes posted on the Ford and Farmall forums.
Trough a series of events I have located a restored "B" close to home here. (Ontario). It interests me because it is only 4 or 5 miles
from where my grandfather had sold it at auction in 1957. I also have found out it was purchased on the same road that he lived on.
I am going to try to attach the only photo I have of my grandfather on his tractor and I would appreciate if any of you could estimate the
year this one was produced. The one I found is either a 47 of 48.
Thankyou for any information you may have.
Brian

Brain, its hard to guess a year real close. The B was built from about 1937 to 1957. The first 3-4 years before the war have some differences that one can see. Your do no have that. so is probably latter than 1941 ... During the war many tractors had steel wheels instead of rubber.. and fenders were different to go with that... again, yours never had steel wheels so that might mean it was built after the war. You have lights and battery, which many from the late 1940s and early 1950s would have had. You also have shutters on the radiator. There are some small differences in the torque tube and other areas late in the 1950s.. cant see the photo well enough to confirm that... For a wild guess I would say 1946- 1954 era. .......... they all look the same in that era.

The tractor serial number is by the shift lever, starting with a B. Reference that number with what you find in the records on this site.

Was he from Australia? Here he is on this side of the world.

I think your Granddad may have installed that above hood muffler to replace the original under hood one.
However, the later Bs did have the above hood muffler.
It has the "B" on the side of the hood which the very early ones did not have.
It has foot brakes and I think '41 was the first year for that.

My Dad bought a B brand new in 1941 (the year I was born). Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it.
It had foot brakes, electrics, hydraulics and a set of 2-way plows.
I think he said it was about $800 complete.
These are wonderful little tractors and they were responsible for the mechanization of many a small one or two horse farm.

Follow the advice and look up the serial number to determine it's exact age.

Thankyou for all your comments. I think I may not have explained myself very well . I have no way of knowing the serial # on my grandfathers
tractor . The one I am looking at is a 1948 and I was hoping to find out by the photo if my grandfathers could have been a 48 . If someone can
tell me for sure that it isn't, then I know it's not his .
Thanks again . Brian

Unless you have the serial number of his tractor there is no way in the world to know what year one is

Somebody check out the tire tread and see if you can find out when they stopped making that tread pattern

Starter rod was moved from being foot operated to beside the throttle control in late 1950. This one is down at brake pedals.

Foot brakes, electric lights and start came pretty early. I can't tell if the front hubs are 5 bolt or 6, that could narrow it down if they are 6. Virtually impossible to say other than newer than 41 and older than 50.

Brian! What JMS/MN is telling you, is that when you reference the serial numbers on the YT site, It will give a set of years that your special serial number was made, Go to the left column of this page and you will find serial numbers, under the heading of research and info. click on that, and use the number, found by the shifter on your transmission. and it should point you to the year, your tractor was made.

Judging by the shine of the paint, the good looking decals and the ''B'' decal in place and a WD parked next to it... the WD has new looking tires and a straight shifter so likely the picture is taken not long after 1948... so it's unlikely that the ''B" would be repainted yet at that point although it could be as I'm not sure if that A-C decal was original in the forties. My grandfather's '46 B had the deep A and S decal as original. My Dad bought a set of replacement decals in 1958 or '59 and they looked like the ones on this B. Personally I would like to guess that the one in the picture is somewhere between '44 & '48. My Dad had a '44 that had those rear tires on it but the years that those tires were put on would need to be confirmed as already mentioned.

My parts book dated Feb of 1950 shows the long A and S decal. AGCO on line only shows the one decal style as well. OK Tractor shows the long vs short as being roughly 1941 or so for the change.
