Probably a dumb question

The transmission is in the rear end housing which starts underneath the battery box. So, no..... removal of the engine isn't required.

Yes. The I&T AC 11 service manual has an illustration of using long line-up bolts when separating the frame from the rear axle, giving you access to the transmission. Personally, I"d prefer to move everything forward, and maintain stability of the tractor.

Please explain to me WHY you'd want to pull the engine to work on the transmission on a WD...?? There is absolutely nothing to gain by doing that....nothing. The 4-speed transmission is in the rear end housing, about 3 feet behind the engine.
