D3500 engine question

A friend of mine has a couple of Military gensets with D3500 engines. How similar to the ag engines are these? He wants to get rid of them and I suggested they might work for farm equipment.

Yes, that is where the hydraulic pump drive would go. Some engines don't even have that much. The vintage of that series of 3500 is from the D-21/ 210/220 tractor days, although it might be newer than 1972, that is the configuration. The injector lines are different, making me think it's somewhat newer, but the engine block,oil cooler and turbo mounting are 1972 and older design.

The tags on the block say one was made in 82 and one in 85 and I can't remember the third one.

Seems like the military ends up with stuff that's out of step with commercial sales. I heard that even a couple years ago the military was still buying 6V-53's for some application.

I've also spotted some Allis 7000 series 4 cylinders that look identical to the old 344 in my track loader (except for the turbo, of course). I haven't measured or looked at one in person but looks like one might work as a replacement if the old 344 goes south.

Thanks guys, that is most helpful. I have a 344 in an HD6 but other than that I am not familiar with the AC engines. They do have a block off plate on one side, is that where the hyd pump would go?

As DrAllis indicates- in general- basically yes, peripherally no. I would say if someone is willing and able, you could usually change over the parts you need off an original engine/application.

An example- we put a Cummins 8.3 out of a truck in my combine. Fuel system was different, so switching that was recommended. But the front housing that the injector pump hangs on was different! To change the front housing the camshaft had to be pulled. To pull the camshaft, the rocker arms had to be removed, and the cam followers held up. etc. etc.

Many things the same......and some things not. Usually, there's no place for a hydraulic pump. Turbocharger (if it has one) may be mounted backwards. Injection pump will be an 1800 RPM setting, and possibly a different brand and lower HP. Front cover engine mounts won't fit in a tractor without modification. Rear plate may not fit a tractor either. Flywheel won't be ag design for a clutch.....probably not anyway. Crank pulley groove count may be a single groove instead of 2 or 3. There ya go. It is pretty much assured it's not a "drop-in" for anything ag related as it is configured. Most other engine brands have similar issues from a stand-by gen set to a tractor application.
