We had a "C" that jumped out of 3rd gear. The quick fix was a rubber band cut out of an old inner tube wired on and when in 3rd we would just secure it in gear by hooking the rubber-band over the shifter lever. That worked all the years we used it. cleddy

Just fixed my cousin's WD-45 diesel for the same trouble. His cover off the transmission had a lot of fork travel when checked in each gear detent. Had at least 3/8 inch travel so I redrilled the cover for .410 ball size instead of 3/8 inch. Spot welded the rail detents and reground the other detent side so the transmission shift collars move farther as needed. It was a lot of work but all gears stay in now..

In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
