7010 PTO and shift cables

My Dad's 7010 has a couple issues we are looking to address. The first is the PTO doesn't always want to disengage. When it happens the tractor must be shut down and then it is fine. It also seems harder to engage the PTO, a mechanic at the dealer he talked to said there is an o-ring that can cause these symptoms. Does this sound likely or anything else we should be looking at?
The other problem is with the power director transmission. It has been getting harder to put it in gear, mostly trying to shift into low on the range selector. Once in gear everything works fine, I am thinking it is the shift cables, does that sound likely or is there something else I should be looking at?
The tractor doesn't get used a whole lot anymore, but it is used for the snowblower so we would like to get it fixed before winter!
Thanks,
John

The PTO disengagement effort problem is because the bracket inside the console that the PTO cable connects to, is bent backwards. Remove the bracket, clamp in a vise and make it "square" again and then weld a brace on the inside corner so it cannot bend again. Make sure the PTO lever is almost 100% clear forward when engaged and that should solve that problem. If you don't get this anchor bracket straightened out, the cable will eventually break off. The range lever not going into low range easily, is a sticky side-shift cable and worn linkage. Try this first, as it may solve the problem. When coming out of Park, always shift into High range first, then into Low range. What you are seeing is Park into Low range, is just half-way back into Park. Going to High first forces the linkage to comply better.
