Not an AC guy but my uncle bought a "B" and would like a front/side mount sickle bar mower for it. I see in the archives that one was available. Don't think he cares if it's aftermarket or not. Any info appreciated. Michigan area if someone has one for sale. My e-mail is open. Thanks.

Randy, read what the guys have said. A sickle with a cam drive like the B was a very BASIC mower. Its good for a hay field twice a year or cutting along the side of the county road 2-3 times a year. This is not a good "weekly" mower for keeping the grass cut. I run in 1st gear as mentioned with the motor about 800 RPM. They just don't work well in other applications. If your cutting the yard, get a belly mower or rear mower.

Thanks, Steve, that's exactly what he wants it for is to do roadsides etc. He's 80 yrs old (a healthy 80) retired policeman/farmer and just like the rest of us, likes to play with the old iron and like many old farmers, hates to see tall grass/weed along the roads. Thanks for all the replies and will pass it on to him whilst I help him find one.RB

One problem your going to find is the mower is heavy to lift when using. Adding a hydraulic cylinder will help to position the bar height. Also the mower and cylinder run off the same PTO hydraulics, so you have to raise the mower while the mower is running. Not a problem , just something to know......... last problem is to "PARK" the tractor you get off and raise the bar and pin into position. Probably a good load for 80 years old.

If he finds one you can send me an e-mail and I'll send you the manual for it. I own one and it is on a C but same as on the B.

I have a Allis #5 mower on my B it has worked very well for what I use it for. I don't run mine at high RPMs and only in first gear and keep the sections sharp. good luck with your search. Randy

There was a sickle mower for the B/C tractors that mounted under the belly of the tractor. It was used with a hand lift or hyd. That same lift is often used with belly rotary mowers like Woods, etc. Not too hard to find....check on craigslist or other ad media. I paid around 150-175 for mine.

I have one that Dad bought with his new AC B in 1948. I think we spent more at the local welding shop than it cost to keep it going. Very good mower to use, but it seemed to beat itself part. I don't want to sell mine, might put it on someday to see if I still don't like it.

I have one sitting out back by the blueberry bushes. Picked up another and loaded it on the upper part of my 5th wheel trailer. It is still sitting up there, haven't had any reason to take it off. That has been a couple months ago... David from jax
