Allis B steering

Is there a way to tighten up the steering on an 49' B steering box. I think it is a Ross steering box. Linkage from the steering arm forward is nice and tight. The play seems to be from the interaction of the teeth and threads in the box. Both the threads and teeth do not seem worn and no metal shavings etc in the grease. Have almost a 1/4 turn of the wheel each way before engagement of the wheels. There is a slotted screw on the right with hex nut but turning it really does nothing. Looking inside the box, I really cant even see what this does/interacts with. I should have some pics later this evening if nobody has figured it out by then! Thanks!

The slotted screw is turned in, clockwise to push the sector shaft "button" onto the worm gear to take up the slack.
If the "button is worn out (as most are) I drill out the worn "button" and buy one for a John Deere M, Part # AM1515T, they call it a stud. The stud on the JD sector shaft is replaceable, and that's how it will be on your B after doing this.
You can also get Tracy Martin (on the other AC site) to make you a "button just like the JD part.
If you don't have the resources to do this modification you can buy a new sector shaft from Steiner, #ACS068 for $98.95.

The slotted screw is turned clock wise to push the sector shaft "button" farther into the worm to take the play out. Usually the "button is worn out. if your worm gear is ok, do this:
Disassemble the gearbox, remove the sector shaft and drill out the worn button, drilling all the way through the arm of the sector shaft. Then you can buy a new replaceable "button" from John Deere, it's for a John Deere M, the # is AM1515T and the last one I bought was about $65. You just slide it into the hole you drilled and put it all back together.
Or you can buy a new sector shaft from Steiner for $98.95 #ACS 068.
