Setting timing on 49 WD

I got it so it ran fairly good, but I noticed that there was fire coming out of the manifold where the gasket should be, and that the muffler was turning red. Also, the gas lever had no effect in slowing it down and it was wide open.
I got the idea I need to turn the mag 180. What do you think.

If the muffler is turning red (hot) with "no load", the tractor is running with very retarded timing. You may want to check the magneto impulse coupling spring. If it is broken or damaged it can cause the timing to be retarded, (about 30 degrees retarded). As was mentioned, it will not run with the timing 180 degrees out.
To set the timing it should be set so that when the Magneto impulse "trips" you have spark at the TDC mark on the flywheel, with the # 1 and/or #4 spark plug wire. (This can be done with the engine not running and by hand cranking it.) With the engine running at "high idle" you should have a spark at the "F" mark on the fly wheel with the #1 and/or #4 spark plug wire.
The governor and throttle linkage should be properly adjusted for your safety and to protect the tractor.
Good luck in your efforts.

Gordon, I don't understand. You say if the muffler is running and getting red hot, then it is 180 out. Then, as I understand it, you say it will not run 180 out.
