Heres what you have to do:

YES reverse batt cables well duhhhhhhhh

YES swap ammeter leads or it would read bass ackwards

YES swap coil leads if its a coil distributor ignition

YES POLARIZE the genny BEFORE you start it

YES your VR has to be suitable for use at Neg ground

YES be sure new elec switch is for neg ground

orrrrrrrrrrrr how about NOT all that work n hassle n just buy a Pos grnd elec switch????

Your tractor your money your choice, we report now you decide

Ammmeter not ampmeter and Butch is correct except with the new polarity the ammeter will show discharge when charging and vice-versa unless you reverse the wires.

Had to scracth my head a minute about what Kip said about the ammeter but I dont think you need to change it as it only knows the direction of flow. You need to re-polorize the generator and depending on how old the regulator is you might have to change it as the older ones were polarity specific, the new ones are not. You also need to reverse the low tension wiring on the coil as he said

You also need to reverse the connections on the coil and ampmeter. If running a generator you need to reflash it and change the polarity.
