Tractor ID Help

I need some help identifying the tractors in the attached pictures. I believe they are both Allis Chalmers. The pictures were probably taken int he 1940s. Can you tell what model tractors they are. It looks to me like there are two different models.

Yep- what they said....the rear wheels give it away in each case. One nut vs several......sort of like politics!

Thank you. It looks like the model C was made from 1940-1949. The girl in the picture is my mom who was born in 1938. She can just barely remember Grandpa selling the workhorses and getting a tractor but doesn"t remember what he purchased. So it would seem possible that the model C was Grandpa"s first tractor (maybe). The model c looks old in the picture but that may just be due to the black and white picture. Would that have to be a pull type sickle mower? I"m still not sure who the young boy is in the picture with the model B.

Pull-type sickle mower? I"d tend to go with a semi-mount on the rear. ok, later maybe, that would be a Model 3. Pull-type would be pinned to the drawbar, and have two wheels on the frame. I do have a Model 3, one wheel on the rear, with WD mounts, but they could also mount on C and others.

The tire style in first picture could be up to 1946 as that was about when that style was discontinued, the others were the style that came out in mid 40's and replaced the first style. Looks like the first picture was a demonstrater that would have had to have been before 1942 as once the war came there were none on dealers lots to demenstrate, the others look like probably tractor that he bought as he wanted a 2 row cultivator instead of the 1 row for the first tractor but by the time the second tractor pictures were taken the first set of tires had been replaced. Probably in 1946 just after the war ended.

(quoted from post at 03:30:25 04/06/13) The old guy looks remarkably like my father, but that sure ain't my brother and sister. What's going on?

Genealogy can be fun but scary at the same time.

What kind of semi mount did the model C have? My dad had an old WD when I was a kid and it seemed like it had two arms on the back of the tractor that went up and down.

You have a sharp eye. I didn't even notice the rear tractor tread. Did the model C come out too late to be used as demonstators since the war started?

Thank you for sharing the pictures. I've been going to paint dads B but was unsure of the placement and style of decals to be used. I can now proceed and will be sure it is right.

Acording to the serial number list here the C came in 1940 and the B in 1937. I would just guess that the single row tractor is just what the dealer had at the time and your family liked the tractor but needed two row capibilities and just ordered one to fit your needs but after the first tires wore out and when the picture of the tractor with faded paint the picture wa taken when the tractor was several years old and the first picture is of brand new paint so that is what I was going by in trying to date things.

Tom make sure you know the year of the tractor. Allis did some creative things with the "A" and "S" along with the color (blue or black) depending on the year.

Another small, easy to see, difference is the pitman arm-drag link position. On a B the arm points down from the sector box so it runs basically level to the arm on front spindle. On a C it points up so the drag link is level to the arm on front box.

I appreciate all of your responses. It is a big help. After more digging and discussion with family it is apparent that the picture with the model B tractor was taken around 1939. The other 2 pictures were taken in the late 1940s and were likely my Grandpa's first tractor. In the 1950s he switched to Farmall tractors and had an IH460 when he reitred around 1970.
