WD 45 hand clutch repair

A month ago or so while operating a brush hop on my WD 45 I broke the secondary clutch throwout bearing (bronze piece). I now have a replacement but when I started to take things apart it looks like I"m not able to figure out how to put the replacement in without splitting the tractor. Do I need to split the tractor or have I overlooked an easier way? Also If I need ot split the tractor where should I split it?

Thanks For any help. It would be much appreciated

no need to split the tractor, just remove the right side frame rail. support the engine and clutch houseings with jacks under them. You then can pull the shaft out to replace the brass bearing.

Look at the pics in the link:

If the bronze part that you are talking about is actually the shifter collar, held together by two bolts, then acwd45man may have good advice. After removing the side rail, it is the shifter shaft that you have to remove in order to drop the shifter fork to provide access to the bolts on the shifter collar. I believe that the access to the bolts is tight, but maybe doable as I think I found a cobbled wrench that my Dad used to do this fix years ago.

If the shifter & bushings are damaged, you have to split the tractor between the transmission housing and torque housing and back the splined drive shaft for the transmsission out of the engine clutch shaft, while sliding the transmission clutch pack off the shaft.

If complete splitting of the tractor is daunting, you can use 3/4" threaded rod to replace the bolts in the siderails. Support the front of the tractor with blocks and back the rear of the tractor away with a floor jack enough to remove the wet clutch & shifter. That is, you stretch the tractor rather than entirely splitting it.

You need to split thetractor at the transmition. its not really that hadr to do I changed mine in one day and still had time for lunch. block the front of the tractor. I use 4x6 pieces left over from building steel buildings. I also put a pole barn spike in to hold them together. use a Floor jack under the drawbar and roll the back away. install the new one and slide back together.

Merry Christmas..
Thanks for all the reply

So far so good I split the tractor. I will need to replace the replace clutch discs too. Since it is a WD45 do I need to replace it with a three disc system or can a two disc clutch be used? What is the avantage?

Also while i was at it I see that the rear end was neglected and the oil was milking. What weight gear lube would you recommend I use?

I really appreciate your help.

Dave

The two disc design was upgraded to three around the time that the 45 replaced the WD. It fits in the same space, so seems a little less prone to slip, although it does give more viscous coupling or drag with cold &/or dirty oil. The additional discs likely give much more use between clutch replacements, as splitting tractors back then wasn't very convenient on the farm and might prompt leaving the tractor in a fence row in favor of a newer model. For infrequent light use, you might get away with a two disc clutch pack.

Use 80W90 oil in the big reservoir that serves the differential, transmission, wet clutch and PTO reservoir.

BTW, if the oil in the rear end is actually milky from water, the most common source is rain squeezing past the rubber dust cover on the gear shifter.
