I got a new thermostat to put in my 1958 D 17 gasser.I can see where and how it fits but the flange groove isnt enough for it to set down in th egroove around housing. It was to stick out about 1/16-1/8 of an dinch so wondering will it fit down in there after tightening up or will i ruin something?i Guess the gasket just goes into the middle between the 3 pieces? thanks for all youhelp in advance ,tim

Dont put it in! You'll more than likely crack the ear(s) on the housing. The thin flange of the thermostat should fit into the shallow recess. Then the gasket. Some Permatex #2 works good for a sealant.
Best to take it back where you got it, along with the housing, and get the correct one.
If it came from an online source, get in touch with them and explain the situation.
Have the dimension for the recess handy or the old thermostat if available, cuz they'll be asking for it.

Thanks its got the rubber gasket on other end so i ll check with steiners, THey've bbeen excellent so far.I just wondered its so close and witht he rubber gasket if it ws suposed to collapse so much during instellation, thansk a gain

I seem to have the same problem with my recently purchased thermostat for a series IV. I got it from Napa and they seem to have good stuff!! I never could figure it out. It didnt stay between the two pieces of the housing like all others I have dealt with in the past. It kinda would fall into it. It had that rubber donut looking thing on it which I didnt know what that was for. Ryan

I recently replaced my D17 Series I 1958's thermostat and it sounds like you got the wrong one. Make sure the old gasket isn't still in the housing first. Otherwise you need to take it back and get the right one.
