The disconnect between the transmission and differential. The purpose of the disconnect was to power the PTO shaft and stop the forward motion of the tractor. What I am wondering is what I have. There is a shifter inplace of the disconnect and it is either in direct, neutral, or reduction. Is sherman the only one who made these?

To my knowledge, Sherman is the only one who made those. What you would have is a stepdown gearbox. They also made a stepup, but I don"t believe there was a combo. IE: stepup/stepdown.I could be wrong, but have never heard of nor run into any others.

Just as important, the "traction release coupling" was to provide power for the mechanical lift for the cultivator/lister. I have a 1944 steel rear end WC with the same Sherman unit you describe. It has three positions.

At present ( spring ) I'm rebuilding a 1939 wc without a rear pto shaft . I know nothing about this tractor and was told that the shifter between the trans abd rear end was to control the side pully shaft . Please tell me that I'm wrong and have a sherman,--- to make my day.

I beleive there is three locations the shifter can be. Direct, Neutral, and step down/up. If you have the sherman. The regular pto disconect will only have two positions in and out.
