D17 Series 3 Wiring-?

Just got this tractor and wanted to put on new amp gauge. But, I found the wiring is different from the manual. This tractor has a negative ground-I thought all Allis's were + gnd. Also the regulator had 3 terminals on the bottom and one on top. On bottom was Bat, F, L., and on top was black wire going to generator. I'm guessing the top terminal is Gen. The L on the regulator wasn't used. It looks like the big red wire from regulator goes to + post on amp gauge, not neg as the book says. What difference does Neg. ground make in installing amp gauge and does it really make any difference whether it is pos. or neg. ground.

An amp gauge is simply a low resistance passive pass through series device, so if it reads bass ackwards all you do is swap the leads side to side. If when shes not running if you switch the lights or ignition on it should swing over to - discharge, but if it swings instead to + charge swap the leads.

If you ever change battery polairty be sure to Polarize the genny before starting !!!!!!!!!!! ALSO if its a gas tractor coil ignition the coil is somewhat polarity sensitive and needs swapped if you change polarity

On most 4 terminal Voltage Regulators BAT FLD LOAD are side by side, while the GEN/ARM terminal is off all by itself and yes it wires to the Gennys ARM post. The LOAD terminal is intended to feed hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition instead of feeding them from the ammeter (same terminal that wires down to BAT on the VR) as done on a 3 terminal (No Load terminal) VR system.

The genny will work at either polarity once polarized.

Your D-17 Series III was originally Positive ground, but unless you"re a purist, it makes no difference as long as you understand what John T.
is telling you.
Here is a wiring diagram from my ITT manual which is much better than the one shown in my original A-C manual. I assume ITT got there diagram from a better A-C manual than I have.

I installed the new amp gauge and hooked the red battery lead to the charge amp terminal since the system is neg ground. Test lead shows power to both posts with key off. When I turn the key or lights on there is no movement in gauge. Also, I don't see anything with tractor running. Any suggestions?

Its NORMAL for BOTH ammeter posts to show hot battery voltage if one side has voltage, its a very low resistance passive series pass through device. If it didnt register near the same voltage on one side versus the other THEN THERES A PROBLEM.

In order for an ammeter to correctly register the NET current INTO (+ charging) the battery or net current OUT OF (- discharging) its SUPPLY side is wired to the battery (often via a connection where big battery cable wires to starter switch or solenoid) while its other LOAD side feeds loads (lights and ignition etc) PLUS wires to the output of the charging system (BAT terminal on Voltage Regulator)

Armed with this information now take a look at your wiring.

John,

I guess I am dense but you are over my head with the technical terms but let me see if I understand. On my neg. ground system, the wire from the VR bat terminal goes to the + or charge side of the amp gauge. The lead from the battery via the solenoid goes to the - or discharge post. The wire going to the ignition switch from the gauge should be on the + post.
