I'm trying to find a starter for my WD45, i found one on eBay for a model B, i know that the starter switch is in a different position, but i was thinking that i could take out the bolts in the back of the starter and then rotate the starter casing to the right position? would this work or would i wast my money?
thanks for any info
I added a link to the auction so you can see the starter,

Don't know about the B, but Im almost sure the CA and WD-45 are not directly interchangeable; I am sure the CA/WD45 are not with the D14/15, tried it. You possibly can swap nose cones, and then it becomes more likely to work. As for rotating, just realize there are but two bolts in the back and there are only two positions you can rotate it to.
I assume you never had a correct starter for your 45, because if you did I'd say it would be easier and not any more expensive to have it rebuilt.

The starter advertised on Ebay would only be for a B or a C. It would have only a 2 shoe field which was used on the B, C, CA and WC. The WD and WD45 starter has a 4 shoe field for the additional starting torque required for the WD and WD45. The B,C,CA starters had more teeth on the drive than the WC-WD-WD45. Except for the B & C, each of the other applications had its own drive end housing to position the switch correctly. Thus, if you wished to convert a B or C to a pull rod starter, change to a CA starter.

Over the years I have seen 3 type of starters for the B/C/WC/WD/WD45 some where what I would call small as in less torque made more or less for the B/C/CA and then the bigger higher torque made for the WC/WD/WD45 and then one that was an odd ball and would fit all of them and work just fine. That said if it is on flea bay I would run from it

I don't think it is the drive but the nose cone. I have one on my C that I can use on my WC and my WD45 and my C but it has 2 mount holes so it fits all of them. I know it does because I used it on a couple of them over the years when I had a bad starter

If it was me, I'd get a replacement to fit/made for a WD-45, had lots of trouble with mine. Found out that a WD-45 with "Power-Creater" pistons uses a starter with a third bushing between the armature and the bendex, to keep the shaft from bending, resulting in the armature hitting the fields when trying to start, just a lesson learned and expensive in time, money and parts.
Just my 2 cents
