Crack in pedestal

Fella's I posted couple days back about a wheel wobble problem on a unstyled WC. Well I got the pedestal all tore down on the ol gal and the bottom bearing was definitely wore although not terrible. What I did find though was a hairline crack that starts at the bottom of pedestal and goes up bout five inches to the first moulded ring on the pedestal. I think this crack is allowin excess play in the bearing/race and Im gona half to clean and close the crack then V it out and weld.That said I have a couple questions. Does anyone know if this pedestal is cast iron or cast steel? Im thinkin cast iron but not sure. And has anyone fixed somethin like this before,if cast iron did they weld with nickle rod or braze the thing? I gotta think with the pounding these ol gals took over the years someone would have run into this before. Thanks so much for any help/advice. Hoss

For all the time and trouble you are going to have , should be real easy to find another pedestal to replace it with.
