AC 180 Alternator and Tach Drive (Pic)

I have read up on the alternator and tach drive for this tractor. The alternator on the tractor seems to be a GM 3-wire, not the OEM. The tractor is a 180 D, sn 5000. The tach drive is in the fender tool box and I'd say it's beyond repair.

Is there a special alternator required for the AC tractors or can a tach drive be installed on a GM alt? The charging system is not working as of now (wiring issues) and changing it is not a problem. I'd like to put a new tachometer into the tractor and it seems I need the proper alternator to do so.

Help guys!

here is a cut n paste from a post I did in the
ford forum when they were looking for an
alternator to replace the generator with a tach
drive on back:
"Wilson reman alternator #90-01-3073 (55amp)
or
Wilson reman alternator #90-01-3056 (32amp)
both are made for external tach drive and were
common on AC and MF tractors.

you must use the above with
Standard Ignition (Blue Streak) brand external
regulator
#VR-103 or VR-103T"

the down side is the tach drive does not come with
the alternator, and there may be a drive gear that
doesn't come with either. So it's ebay and google
and salvage yards you go for the drive parts.

Maybe you want to modernize the instrumentation
anyway. You can get a tach that reads off a
magnet in the crank pulley or the flywheel, or a
tach that can read the signal from a 10si
alternator's R terminal (some models of 10si).
Digital gauges, LED dashlighting, you'll be flying
high :)

Nice find.
I like the one-blank-ty styling of the ACs. (guess
that means the 220 etc too)

Thanks for the information there karl_f. I took a "Walk from the Red Side" when I bought this one. I like the looks of them and I always wanted an A-C. I am Googling parts right now. I think I may strike gold (optimistic).

I am taking pictures of the IH valves tonight and shooting them to your Yahoo email. I don't know if you need/want them any more.

Thanks!
