AC G no.4 sickle bar mower , PTO questions

Does anyone have a sickle bar mower on their G? This G doesn't have the PTO, but instead just has a block off plate. how much is involved in adding the belt drive unit/PTO? Where is a good place to look for the PTO unit used?

Thanks, in advance, for any and all help.

Pto's sometimes show up on fleabay. Or try Sandy Lake Equipment, they may have a used one. What is involved is to take off the cover, mount the pulley and it's gear, and setting the backlash on the gears. Couple ways of checking the backlash: Plastigage on the gear teeth, roll the pulley 1 turn, remove and check the plastigage. 2nd way is to paint one gear with prussian blue, mount, turn, and see where the blue is worn off. Adjustment is made by adding shim gaskets between the tranny and housing.

(quoted from post at 08:46:38 12/07/10) I have a number 4 sickle mower on my G and used it this summer to mow my pasture.

Darryl,

Thanks for the reply. Do you have manual lift on your tractor, and if so, how much of a strain is it to raise and lower the sickle bar? Also, do you know of a good parts source for the wear parts on the mower, such as ledger plates, rock guards, sickle knives, etc?

Thanks again,
John

Yes mine is a manual lift. If the tension spring lift is adjusted correctly it is no problem to raise and lower. I bought guards at Tractor Supply but have not replaced ledger plates.
