185 problem

My neighbor has a 185 diesel and he said that when he was out plowing the tractor would miss a little and come down to 2000 rpm and stay there for a while then come back.He has already done the filter and drained the tank of any water with no change.any ideas?i am not familiar with these are there any common problems unique to this tractor?thanks for any help

Check that screen in the sediment bowl. See if it has a dull grey "dirt" look to it.

If there is any crap floating around in the tank (usually supplied from the pump return), it's gotta come thru that screen first, even before it gets to the filter.

Once the tractor gets to the point of the dying/starting/dying thing, then we gotta look at that pump.

However, what you are describing is just plain ol' fuel starvation.

Suspect the plastic ring in the (Roosa Master) Injection pump. It deteriorates and breaks up into small pieces that plug up the return line fitting, or just plain float around.
This subject has been covered before, happens to most all RM/stanadyne pumps used on many different farm tractor engines.

thanks guys,i will check the screen out but i also suspect the pump this tractor sits alot and i don't know what quality of fuel has gone through it,maintinence is not the first priority on his farm he doesn't have much help or a shop.

Something else to check is the little roll pin on the shaft that drives the injector, Mine would spit and sputter then take off and run, thought it was the injector pump. Had it rebuilt for about $480. only to have it start acting up all over again. The old man who rebuilt it told me to pull the shaft and sure enough that litlle roll pin on the tapered end was sheared cost me .30 cents to fix.
