allis C crankshaft thrust bearing

when i removed the oil pan on my 49 C, i found the foward thrust bearing to only have the trust collers on the lower bearing shell. the upper bearing shell was a normal bearing without the sides like #2 & #3. is this normal? i have the service manual at home two weeks away(im at work for two weeks) and have not noticed this situation noted. any help will be great help. i hope to use the same bearings, they look to be in servicable condition. thanks, d.coleman

thanks, after a closer look i couldn't see any other way the block had been machined. the oddness of this engine keeps suprizing me, oiling system with cam being the main carrier and distributor of oil, wick for lubeing flywheel pilot bearing, ect. i guess it has worked for 60 or 70 years so it must be good engineering. thanks again, d.coleman
