asking how to tell what year it is or where the serial # is located? anything model-specific to look for on these as far as problems? is the clutch hydraulic? thanks!!

Look on the flange on the left side of the torque tube were it bolts to the engine.
See what group your numbers falls into.

1964: 1001

The XT"s have a tendency to blow out one side or the other on the power director

The clutch is NOT hydraulic. The power director is hydraulic.
I have never heard they have a tendency to blow out the power director.
The earlier series had weak rear ends.
Series III had the large axles and the 4 pinion differentials as well as the transmission improvements.
