Model B spark plug. What do you use??

I know I have read this, but I did a search and could not find the thread.

I currently am running Champion 841 J8C Plugs in my 1940 Model B. I did a tune up this spring after having some problems w/ snow causing the ol girl to run rough.

I thought I remembered someone recommending some "hotter plugs" that would be better for the B.

It is starting hard again, and was gonna try the hotter plugs, before tearing into the whole magneto/coil route again.

Thanks,

The J8C is the right plug in Champion and it crosses to the 295 in Autolite.
Some use the Autulite 303 with the battery ignition. {Distributor}.

Changing the plugs is probably not the answer.
First thing to do is to inspect the points and make sure they are gapped to 0.020.
If they are off it will change the timing and make the engine start hard.
The carburtor will be the next place to look for a problem.
Air leaks in the manifold gasket will also make for hard starting.

With the engine running pull a plug wire and check the color of the spark. White/blue is good, yellow, weak. See if you can make the spark jump around 1/2".

Do not forget to check the distributor cap for cracks or short lines where the spark could be jumping. Sometimes this type of problem is weather sensitive.

I use NGK plugs I get them at NAPA I use them in all our small equipment at the railroad and they take some real abuse . I have had bad luck with Champions they short out if an engine is flooded while hot my guys are always forgetting to turn the on-off switch back on. Don't have any experience with Autolite I would prefer to buy American but can't beat the NGK's. T.J.

Thanks for all the responses.

I just did the points, plugs, plug wires, etc tune up this spring when I had problems w/ the tractor sitting in the snow. I probably have less than 50 hrs on the tractor since this was done.

Is it possible this is all out of wack again this fast????

Blessings,
