How do you check R.P.M's

I have a 1949 Model B, still 6 volt, positive gd. system.with a magneto. Have had this little B for 18 yrs. I would to check actual rpms, instead of by ear. Can you use a tach dwell on it, or is there another way?

Harbor freight has a handheld, non-contact laser tachometer, reasonable, you stick a small piece of reflective tape, on the crank pulley, and point the tach toward it, and it gives you the readout of the shaft speed.

If you have a hand-held mechanical tach, like the Lufkin that was used to check combine rpm, etc- you could hold it to the pto shaft and compute the engine rpm according to pto speed.

Thanks alot guys, I never thought of using the PTO speed. A friend of mine is a retired Tractor mechanic, will check with him to see if he has a tach. Ive been monitoring YT for 5-6 yrs. This is first time Ive ever tried posting. Appreciate the quick response. Does anyone know what the precise ratio would be?

Model B, 1938-42, BE engine, governed speed was 1400 rpm. 1943-57, CE engine, governed speed was 1500 rpm. PTO should be 540.
