Allis B brakes

Having a problem installing new brake bands and adjusting screws in a 'B' that I am restoring. It appears that the adj screws are too short, linings too thick or bands are short. The adj screws lack 1/2'' of reaching the nut in the band when the brake lock cam is in the lock positon. The adj screws are the same length as the old ones but cams would not lock then either. The adj screw measures 2 1/4'' from the shoulder to the end of the threaded end. Is it possible they are manufactured too short? Has anyone else experienced this?
New band kits were purchased from this site.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Yep- in fact I remember shopping around one time to find shoes with screws (some come without) just to have to buy longer bolts to make them work!
I cut a slot in the head so it could still be adjusted with a screwdriver. I can't remember if I had to grind a little on the corners of the hex head ?

there are 2 types of adjuster. Also the new bands are not set to the same stiffness and arc as the originals.

Best solution is a longer bolt. Once the bands wear in a bit you may be able to reinstall the original hardware.

The repro bands will work OK, once they are the right shape. Problem is they are often way off as shipped. If you can get things hooked up you need to mash, or pull them as hard as you can, (you may need some extention on hand brakes handles) and they will conform to the drums after a few adjustemnts and be OK. Your other choice is to pull them back out of the finals and wrap them around something the same diameter as the drum and knock them to shape. You will still have to perform the barke application steps and adjustment, but less of them in order to get them as they they need to be to work and not need adjusted every other time you use them.

Thanks for the responses. I went ahead and made longer adjusting screws yesterday and everything worked out. Like you said after they form to the drum I may be able to install the original hardware. This is going to be a parade tractor, so it may be a long time before anything gets changed.
Thanks again
Dennis
