5050 fuel tank

After replacing the lift pump the tractor ran fine for a 2 or 3 minute test. Next day it died about 50 feet from the shelter. Removed fuel line from lift pump and filters and only a small drip of fuel. Removed the fuel cut off valve and still just a fast drip. Tried to rod out the hole in the tank and can only get a small piece of wire inside. A nail will not go in. Feels like something very hard. I thought it was a tank screen but was told it has none. What could it be and what should I do?

Looking for a gearbox casing that mounts to a Clinton Machine Company motor Model B764COC Serial# 2070576 part# 3801-C. It powered a Bolen 2 wheel walk behind tractor late 1940s model.
