PS: I marked the distributor position very well, understanding that that is only for timing and I will have to retime the engine. The gears in the governor have been rotated freely so they will have to mesh with the cam gear. That is where I bumped the starter once and chickened out. Afraid that I might chip a tooth as it probably wasn't in. I tried to turn the main gear with the distributor shaft to help it mesh but wasn't able to get it in. That's as far as I went before seeking experienced help. That took about two hours. And it gets heavy and frustrating so I thought I'd better stop.
Now it's in place, but still about 1/4" away from seating. The parts book shows some kind of a slot at the distributor end of the main shaft that might be used to turn the gear. It would be accessible through the large cap plug at the Dist end of the shaft. Do you agree? I am afraid to bump the starter for fear of chipping a tooth.
