12v Conversion C D15 Questions (Newbie)

Hello! I just bought my first tractor, a '65 D15 Series II (Gas). I bought manuals, but they are a little vauge so I have many questions. The 1st being: My tracker has a negative ground on the battery. Is there a coversion from positive to negive ground. If so what does this involve? The system's not charging the wiring is pretty bad shape, so I want to rebuild the hardness.

Thanks,

Sure, you can convert from Pos to Neg ground simply by reversing the battery,,,,,,,,Polarizing the Generator (BEFORE start up),,,,,,,,,reverse ammeter and ignition coil leads as/if needed BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT thats not any cure for a genny thats not charging !!!!! and I see no reason to go to all that trouble, why not leave it as is assuming that was original and the ammeter registers correctly ?????? If shes not charging swapping polarity isnt likely to help and it could hurt the VR if you dont polarize properly !!!!!!! If it has been setting for A LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGG TIME it wont hurt to polarize the genny just in case (see my Troubleshooting for directions)

My Troubleshooting Procedure URL below will help diagnose the cause of non charging and in Para 5 tell how to see if its a Genny versus the VR problem. Check easy simple things first like a good belt and good grounds on BOTH the genny and VR

Thanks John, My tractor has an alternator. I don'tknow if it has been converted to a negative ground or not but the guy I bought from just got it from his uncle who past away. He put a new battery in and might have installed it wrong and damaged something. That's why I wanted to know all that got into the convertion.

Most alternators require NEGATIVE GROUND so if thats the case DO NOT HOOK UP THE BATTERY POSITIVE GROUNDED...........

Thanks again John, Most of the wiring is old and cracked and there's probably shorts everywhere, so I think start by rebiulding the harness, and go from there.

I have ran into many cobbled up set-ups and past expereince is redo it to save alot of trouble down the road.If it is a older 12 volt system with voltage regulator and so on/I start over.$80 will buy a 12v 1 wire altenator with built in voltage regulator.Just my $.02
