I have a 51 CA that pops out of third gear. How much of a project is it to fix and where do I begin?

I would start by pulling the side cover off. You may have a bent fork,a worn gear, or a broken detent spring. Remove the shift lever first before trying to remove the side cover.

I had removed the side cover befor i read your message, it practicly fell off. There was no major damage other than one of the forks was pretty worn on both sides. Could this be the culprit?
