i just got a series 1 D17 the power director lever keeps popping out when it is in high. the tractor works fine when in low range. what is the cause and what is required to fix this problem.
thanks-

You may have to take it appart and rebuilt it. There are round steel balls in it and over time they get a flat spot and that throws the PD clutch out. To get to it, I believe you have to split the tractor.

It's not round steel balls. Each side (High & Low) has 3 engage/disengage links with little rollers and feed ramps on the PD unit housing. The little rollers get flat spots and the feed ramps get worn down. You have to split the tractor between the torque tube and the transmission and remove the PD unit to fix. The little rollers were like $15 each ($45 for each side) from AGCO about 3 years ago. If the feed ramps are worn you need to find a salvage PD unit in better shape or a good machinist to build them and machine them back into shape.

Note if you adjust the shims to tighten up the PD, it will pop out worse.

I've had the same problem on my D17. I replaced the rollers only and the problem is now much better but not cured. Mike

Mine does the same when the engine is just warming up. What helps me is to turn the throttle down, shift the power director into high and evenly increase the throttle speed. It usually stays there, though if it doesn't, I just hold my foot on it until it stays (;>). When the engine is at full operating temperature, it never pops out. If yours is bad, perhaps you will need to rebuild, but I wouldn't unless you want a show-piece tractor or really need to.

Hope this helps.
