I have a 170 gas Allis Chalmers.
It keeps charging and the battery is boiling would it be the voltage regulator or is the battery bad, Battery is old. maybe 6 or so years.

EITHER could be the culprit.

On old, failing battery will boil out acid.

A bad voltage regulator can cause the battery to overcharge, making it boil over.

Simple to tell, though. Whip out the 'ol VOM and check the charging voltage.

Thanks to all that answer the Voltage regulator was stuck and little tapping on it and it works fine.

If the VR's field current control relay is stuck at the high charge position and shes not chattering/cycling she may be overcharging n outgassing the battery n she boils over and that can ruin it........ Once those relay contacts get all burned n pitted and sticking and the silvery coating is gone theyre not gonna perform well.....

Take a volt meter and see what the charging voltage is across the battery terminals with the engine at 1/2 throttle or better. On a 12 volt system you should have around 14.5 volts. Your regulator is probably defective if its a lot higher than 14.5 volts. Hal.

Replaced voltage regulator but ammeter is showing a slight discharge. Could it be the alternator got damage with the overcharging.
Alternator was very hot when I relized that the voltage regulator was stuck and over charging , when I opened the voltage regulator up it had water in it the seal was bad so it was rusty in the inside and the contact was stuck down. That's why I replaced the Voltage regulator.
