I just bought a WD or WD45 and not sure what the difference is and how to tell. Never owned a Allis Chalmers before. The serial number is "WD 231580 GA". Would like to find out the year too if anybody could help

THANKS!!!!

A true WD45 will have a curved shifter and not bolt on plate on the right side of the engine. A WD will have a bolt on plate on the right side of the engine and most have a straight shifter. Of course you can also have a mutt since both engines will fit in either tractor

That sounds like the engine number, not the tractor number.
The only thing that is odd is the 'GA'..WD engines on a WD had either 'PA' or 'KA' as a suffix.
Might be a power unit engine.
The WD-45 engine started with '45 XXXXXXX'
The tractor serial number is on the left side rear end housing.

A WD will have one line coming from the bottom of the oil filter housing. The WD45 will have a tee in the bottom of the housing with two lines.

WD45 starts at serial number 146607. Number is on the left rear vertical face of the differential. Starts with WD.
