1938 WC NO SPARK!!

I went to pull out the WC today and she wouldn't fire. I drove it in the shed when I parked it there and it ran perfectly. Points are making and breaking, the mag is "snapping" like I believe it is supposed to. So where do I start? How do you test these?

LM

Check for corrosion in the cap and plug wire ends , I've had aluminun caps and wire ends that corrode real bad as opposed to brass that very seldom need cleaning.

Well I would start by making sure you have a nice blue white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. If you do not have a good spark I would clean or replace the points and see if that helps

Yeah, as I said...there is no spark what so ever. Points look fine, I did file and reset them...still nothing. What's next? Replace them anyway. Anyone want a good deal on a WC?

(quoted from post at 03:28:22 04/20/09) Sounds like you need a new condenser to me. rw

Would a bad condenser keep the mag from sparking? I thought that it just kept the points from burning? I was at my local tractor parts joint today and they didn't have the points or rotor for it.

If you think the condenser will cause it to not spark, I'll change it out. So far, I filed the points and reset them. I see no evidence of spark or any electrical current whatsoever, but just a thought, could that current be going right to ground through a shorted condenser? What if I disconeccted teh condenser to test it that was the problem? Wouldn't that then work? But just be hard on the points???

Thanks,

LM

Yes, if the condenser is bad the condensor will not spark. Had the same problem on a 1951 John Deere G. Put in a new condensor and it fired right up. rw

So do you think NAPA would carry a condenser that would work? It is just a standard looking condenser with the wire attached...

I found a condenser in a ignition tune up kit that I had in the shop that was for a later model Allis so I robbed the condenser out of the kit. I switched it out with the other supposed bad one and the old WC fired right up.

Thanks for the tips guys, saved me a lot of time.
