What have I got myself into on restoring an Allis Chlmers G? Tractor has been setting for 10 years because of blown head gasket . Oil looks clean radiator and gas tank are dry and wiring WOW !!! Motor turns over pretty easy and seems to have good compression .

I have just bought a G as well. Mine has been sitting for 5 years, owner says it was running fine when put into the garage 5 years ago. Looks like it was well taken care of. I don't have it yet, will pick it up from the owner in a week or so.
Since it has not been run for so long, I want to pull the plugs and put some Kroil or Marvel in the cylinders and then turn it over with a wrench and see how she goes before I try to start it. Probably have to drain fuel and clean up the carb as well. I bought a D17 last summer that had sat outside for 2+ years and the gas had turned green - dang ethanol!
If you have any maintenance tips on the G I would be really interested in them.
cheers,

got a 48 G was one of the most detailed restorations i've ever done but was well worth it when it was done and thier very easy to work on

Something I always point out to G owners is the clutch is supposed to be locked down for storage. They are noted for problems releasing the clutch when not stored properly. If your is, tie it to a tree and try to pull the tree over. At leat before you tear it apart. So far I have never had to tear one down when that happens.

Just plain fun tractor, or favorite with the kids. If they get in trouble, all they have to do is remember to stand up. I mounted a extra switch near the seat so the kids could shut it off, as the designer guys must have all been six foot tall when they were placing the ignition switch.

We started all the kids, and neighbor kids out driving the G. I would wrap a twine string around the coil wire, and around my wrist and walk behind them. And to avoid coments, I best not coment on how old they were.

Implments are getting harder to come by, but I don't think anyone is scraping them out now anyway.
