WD45 distributor won't turn

Please understand, I'm FAR from being a mechanic so understand about my lack of terms described below.

My tractor won't start and just before it died out the hydraulics quit. It was in neutral and it sounded like the engine was getting more and more of a load on it even though I was doing NOTHING! Finally it died and will not start.

The distributor is not turning. The vertical gear at the bottom of the distributor meets a horizontal gear .. that is also not turning. When you look into the firing hole (for lack of a better term), that IS turning!

What do you think is broke? Some kind of shear pin? I only have the users manual and it doesn't show the exploded diagram of this area. Also, if I did break a pin or something, what caused that? Did the hydraulic motor seize up to cause it?

Any ideas/comments would be great. Sorry for my lack of engine comprehension terms. I'm learning as I go!

Thanks much!

Could be the cam gear. Hal
PS: Are the valves moving?

makita, you would need to tell us a little more in order for the folks here to help much. Unless you have an add-on hydraulic pump, the distributor would not have any connection to the hydraulic pump. The original pump is attached to the torque tube on the same side of the tractor as the distributor and behind the belt pulley or starter motor, depending on what you have and recognize. The original hydraulic pump is driven by lobes on the engine clutch shaft, which is behind the engine.

The distributor is driven by gears at the front of the engine. If you have a loader or some other implement that has required the addition of an external hydraulic pump, you will have to tell us, or maybe even post a picture.

Stu, I'm sorry, your right. I DO indeed have an add on hydraulic pump connected to the distributor gear for my loader. I guess with my limited mechanical ability I just thought it was original equipment.

Today I took off the hydraulic pump and that spun fine by hand, then I cranked over the engine and that end where it connects spun fine too.

I'm really confused now as I thought I would find a broken pin or something. As of now, it looks like I could put it all back together and it SHOULD work. But WHY didn't it work before is the question.

Sorry again, maybe I'm getting in over my head. Thanks again for all the advice in advance !!

OK, you are on the right track. Before you put stuff back together, take the end that connects to the pump and try turning it by hand or with a screw driver. It should have a little backlash, but that is all. If you can move it more than that, then you have a problem in that section, perhaps a drive pin like you suggest. That flange was not made to drive a hydraulic pump, just a magneto or distributor. Obviously it can be done, but there is a risk of shearing a pin or taking out the gears as others have suggested.

Also, with the distributor assembly off the engine, can you turn the jaw coupling of the distributor and make the distributor spin?
It is possible that

Yup, found the problem. I posted it above. Now I gotta just figure out how to time this beast!

Thank you

you better check the gov and cam shaft gear for it sounds like you have shelled some teeth.

I think you might have a tractor that originally had a magneto.. Is the distributor mounted to the engine by a 2-bolt flange?
So the 'firing hole' is visible near the oil filler cap?
If so, there are a few pins that could be sheared, also there is a jaw coupling between the distributor and engine.

Yes the distributor is mounted by a 2 bolt flange, and the firing hole is right next to the oil filler cap.

I'm going to try and get the hydraulic pump off today and see what I can find.

Thank U.

If your tractor had a magneto, then it is a WD, not a WD45, as all late WD's as well as 45's came equipped with distributor ignition. That is why your manual, if original, does not show the distributor.

Thank you for the pic, I do NOT have that diagram in my book. Still not sure what the problem is but I thank you for helping with the picture.
