Allis Chalmers WC manifold

Hello again, I have a 1940 WC with the manifold with the straight pipe coming out the side. My question is this the hood also has the hole in the hood for a muffler. Which manifold would be the correct one for this model year or could it be either? I'm trying to keep it as close to original with the exception of the 12 volt system and alternator. Thanks

I have never seen a WC with a pipe out he side. I would almost bet some one did that for some reason and its probably not stock/factory made that way. Pipes out the side work well in places where there is low tree limbs

In the AGCO parts book they show several manifolds for the WC and one looks like it used a straight pipe that comes out of the side of the manifold at an angle. It also shows a muffler can be used in the same hole also.

The other manifold show a muffler coming from the top of the manifold.

the unstyled wc had the maniold with the pipe coming out the side under the hood that angled to the right. i had a 35 wc with that type manifold and it had a straight pipe about a foot long on it .

Most if not all of the unstyled WC's had the pipe angled off to the side like the one in the picture. My 1937 WC is like that. I believe that when they changed to the styled, the manifolds for the low octane fuel continued to have the pipe angled off to the side and no hole in the hood, while those made for gasoline went straight up through the hood. I think that's how it was, but I'm not absolutely certain. I do know that most unstyled are like in the picture as are some of the styled.

These scans are from my WC parts book. All kero engines and the dual fuel engines used the side angle manifold. But remember for many years the angle manifold couldn't be purchased any more. So as manifolds failed, they were replaced with the later vertical style and a hole was cut into the hood for the pipe and muffler.

I have 3 wc's my 37 has the pipe out the side the 40 also hade the pipe out the but the manifold was bad and changed it to a straight on and the 43 is straight. but if there is a hole in the hood that hood could be off of a leter wc or wd or a wd45?

Right on, JoeM
The manual can't be argued with, another thing I remember is the rectangular part that the exhaust pipe fits in came in two versions, one for gas and one for kerosene and there is a G embossed on the part for burning gas and a K for kerosene. By the way Stu, your '38 looks absolutely correct, great job!
Thanks, Harry

Thank for your help I'll start looking for the other manifold and exhaust. At least now when i go to the fair I won't have to put a can over the exhaust pipe i can use a rain flap.
