The proper way to fix it is to mill out the bottom of the block, machine new deck bushing and press them in. From what I understand from my cousin who is a machinist that does this, with the the 301 block, the openings are not large enough to drop the new deck bushings straight in and you have to deform them from round to get them thru the top then get them back to round inside the block and press them in. I guess that is NOT an easy task but doable to a machinist with the right skills. I had a similar problem on my 226 block for my D17 that he fixed for me but that block doesn't have the same clearance problems for the deck bushings. Mike

Why didn't he put the bushings in from the bottom?

Had the same problem with a 3406 Cat years ago. Repaired with a welder and die grinder. Took a little time but the repair outlasted the truck.
