Hey guys me again... I decided to pull the head off my D-17 last night and inspect, was not very happy with what I found. Looks like the exhaust pipe is rusted out around the manifold and let water in the engine (rain, melted snow??)...anyway the cylinders are severely pitted and now im wondering if I can even get the pistons out without destroying them. Any more advice?? I appreciate all replies guys...thanks

You didn't say gas or diesel so will assume gas. The 226 engine used in D17 is a wet sleeve engine so pulling piston and sleeve assembly out the top is no big deal, simply bump whole assy out the top with a hardwood applied to bottom. Once assy is removed you can press piston and rod assy out of the sleeve either way. If it is pitted as bad as you indicate the rod will be the only part salvagable, you'll need new sleeve seals to re-assemble(o rings & copper crush ring.

Im corrently pulling the sleeves out of a d17 now . I tried the oak board the .170 sleeve edge is better than any wood splitting mal i have . so i built a puller and have had to double the 3/8 thick metal cause it was bending in the middle but there out no jack hammer just a impact to turn the nut.

You are jumping off the deep end of the pool with no good reason. Head is off, you are looking at the top of the pistons. Is the engine stuck- if so...put some ATF in each jug and let it sit for a week. If not stuck- pull the pan, push the pistons out. If they are stuck, push them out with a jack. If the liner comes up, block that with a steel plate using the head bolts as an anchor. I had a '37 WC that went through a 4 inch rain, took a skidloader bucket filled with sand on the front end, to hold it down, with a 20 ton jack underneath to push out the last piston. Liner wanted to come up, held it down with a half-inch plate. KISS formula.

i had a d14 in the same shape . so after a month of trying to break it free . i decided to bust the pistons out so i could use a sleeve puller to remove the sleeves. i used a 2 inch scedule 80 pipe and 8 lbs sledge. dad held the pipe and i swung the hammer as hard as my 255 lbs frame would alow .now the rest of the storry i never busted the piston i just scared the top a little but it broke free . i had done the same with wood and it didnt break free . my thoughts were that the wood absorbed to much of the energy from my sledge. and the pipe delivered all the energy .

Did the same thing years ago when I was starting out in a Ford tractor dealership in Va. was working on a 4000 diesel that belonged to a not so well liked timber cutter that got sugarred worked on it a half day till the shop foreman came over and had me hold a lead babbit on the piston and he hit it with a sledge and with one fall swoop it came loose he said don't tell the manager now get busy.
