Near Disaster

Late in 2000 I bought a 43' Allis Chalmers C. It needed a fare amount of work, but it ran. It still had steel wheels which would later be part of the problem. I arived early in the morning to pick up the tractor, a friend and I came with a flatbed trailer. Clyde my friend, told me to start it up and bring it round to load it. Well It was the first time I ever drove the C and the steel on the pavement of the lot where we were loading it made alot of noise and was somewhat distracting. We had to modify the ramps on the trailer to accomadate the tight front wheel. Well I got the front end onto the trailer changed the ramps and brought the back on. The ramps were metal and the tractor bucked and made alot of noise on its way up. Finally loaded and ready to head home. Got it home, clyde had me pull it off the trailer, the metal on metal of the ramps and tires made it slippery, while backing down, I touched the right brake, which sent the tractor sliding sidways off the trailer, to the ground luckily I was able to hit the clutch and brakes. For several minutes I sat with the front wheels resting barely on the trailer which was rather high. Clyde managed to pile some blocks under the front end and I eased it down. If the tractor would have been much high on the ramps it could have been a very bad situation. Luckily Clyde myself and the tractor walked away somewhat shaken, but with out a scratch. Be careful unloading. . . .
