Judds John Deere H

As I grew up in Carroll County OH, my parents both worked, so I spent many days on my grandparents' farm. At the age of 6, I was placed upon the seat of grandfather's John Deere H. I could only steer of course. The men were picking up piles of loose hay from the field as the tractor progressed in first gear. I enjoyed driving and listening to the putt-putt sound so much that I told my grandfather (whom we called 'Judd') that if he ever wanted to get rid of that tractor, I would like to have it. The year was 1957. Fast forward to 1992. My family was living next door to my grandparents. Judd called one day and said to come over and get the John Deere H, he was through using it. I asked why would you give it to me? That's when he reminded me of what I had said in 1957. Judd has since passed away, but I still regularly use the John Deere H. My children have all grown up and somehow I still have a pony named 'Buddy'. Buddy is a great excuse to use the tractor and my other farm toys for baling hay, mowing pasture and hauling manure. Everytime I start the John Deere H I'm reminded of my grandfather, Judd. I hope that one of my grandchildren will someday appreciate the John Deere H. For someday, Buddy and I will both be gone, but the John Deere H will still be running.

Today's Featured Article - Madison's County - by Anthony West. Philip Madison has been a good friend of mine for quite some time. He has patiently suffered my incessant chit chat on the subject of tractors for longer than I care to remember, and on many occasions he has put himself out, dropped what ever it was he was doing, to come and lend a hand cranking handles, or loading a find onto a trailer. Although he himself has never actually owned or restored a tractor, he was always enthusiastic and always around helping with other peoples projects. ... [Read Article]
